Sony has just announced its answer to the Xbox Elite controller, dubbed the DualSense Edge; PlayStation’s offering is more than just a superficial upgrade. The “high performance” controller is customizable to an impressive degree, easily trading blows with the Xbox Elite Controller.

The company has taken some of the best features from the Elite controller and some of the third-party “pro” controllers. With removable analog thumbstick, rear paddle buttons, swappable analog stick tops, and the ability to create and store different custom profiles.

The DualSense Edge lets players change the stick caps for three different types: standard, high dome, and low dome. The buttons on the back are also swappable, with a dome or a lever design. These back paddles can be mapped to any button for easier access. A great advantage over the Xbox Elite Controller is that the DualSense Edge allows for easily swappable analog stick modules (which will be sold separately).

Sony has added the ability to adjust the triggers on the back. The trigger locks will allow players to minimize the travel distance of the triggers, which is ideal for twitch shooters. Also, the controller will let players deactivate buttons (to avoid accidental inputs) and change stick sensitivity and dead zones.

Like the Xbox Elite Controller and other pro controllers, you can save multiple customizable profiles for different games. There is an interface on the controller with a dedicated button that will let you change profiles, adjust volume and chat balance, and access profile settings on the fly.

The DualSense Edge comes with a robust braided USB-C cable along with a housing that locks onto the controller for wired play. Like the Xbox Elite Controller, Sony’s offering comes with a carrying case, so everything you need is all in one place. The case is also able to charge the controller as well.

Finally, the pricing and release date have not been confirmed at the Gamescom Opening Night reveal. According to the vice president of PlayStation, Hideaki Nishino, the controller’s release is months away.
