Rumour: Sony to Announce a Premium Pro Controller for PS5 - Push Square

2022-06-25 15:36:38 By : Ms. Vivi Gu

Sony will allegedly respond to fan demand and announce a premium quality, pro version of the DualSense controller for the PS5 – potentially later this month. The pad – codenamed Hunt – has been revealed by journalist Tom Henderson, who has a relatively sturdy track-record when it comes to “industry insider” matters. He claims the device will feature removable analogue sticks, trigger stops, and rear button paddles, like the short-lived back button attachment for the DualShock 4.

According to Henderson, who claims to have seen prototype pictures of the pad, the unit retains the same iconic look and shape of the existing DualSense controller. But it has buttons beneath the analogue sticks which are used to release them so they can be interchanged. There are also grips around the unit which, again, can purportedly be removed. The stops on the triggers will allow you to shorten the length of travel, which pro gamers argue helps with reaction times in shooters. It’s unclear how those will work in conjunction with the DualSense’s existing adaptive triggers, but time will tell on that front. It’s also unclear whether the controller will work on a PS4 or PC, but we expect it would.

It’s possible the pad could be announced as early as this month, with Henderson hinting that Sony has a number of smaller non-console “hardware announcements” planned for June – although he failed to elaborate on what else those could entail. Sony has, in the past, relied of third-party accessories manufacturers to plug the potentially lucrative pro controller gap on its consoles, but that’s always felt like an oversight on the organisation’s part – it looks like it’s finally got the memo on this front, at least.

A true PlayStation veteran, Sammy's covered the world of PS gaming for years, with an enormous Trophy count to prove it. He also likes tennis games way more than you.

I’m sick of seeing rumors popping around because people believe these sorts of things and then when it turns out to not be true, people get upset. I think we should just wait and see what Sony has to say.

My idea of 'premium' would be putting the iconic shape colours back.

@anoyonmus This is a fairly reliable source, though.

Kinda hope this is true! not really keen on the idea of removable bits and bobs in respect to how long the controller lasts without something breaking, but the integrated back paddles alone would make me interested in buying.

They better remove the pad for a bigger accu.

What would make it a premium product in my eyes-> a bigger battery! The one is Dual Sense is laughable in terms of longevity. As for removable triggers and stuff- I had an Elite v2 when I had an XSX and as nice as it was it developed left stick drift wihtin 6 months. Let's hope Sony make their controller more reliable in that respect. If this rumour turns out to be true, of course.

@get2sammyb not the first time we hear this...

FINALLY! Been wanting one ever since the Xbox Elite controllers came out.

I still find it odd that Sony decided to release the back button attachment for Dual Shock 4 only to then not have back buttons on the Dual Sense.

Maybe it was solely so they could charge for this 'premium' model.

Let's hope they go for better stick technology. I would never buy a premium controller with traditional sticks, drift is too much of a crap shoot. I've been using the GuliKit King Kong 2 controller on Switch and PC lately, it has electromagnetic sticks that apparently don't drift.

I would buy this in a heartbeat.

@__jamiie "Maybe it was solely so they could charge for this 'premium' model." I would understand that, as not everyone would make use of it, it would just add to their cost of manufacturing. Me personally I wouldn't use the back buttons as much, I think I would accidentally hit back buttons too often. But, a premium build with swappable thumbsticks, etc.? I'd pay for that.

I use to not see the point of these but my xbox controller was in bad shape leading up to Halo Infinite's so I decided to get a pro Xbox controller. I gotta say even as someone who doesn't play super serious its a great controller. The only thing I don't like is the trigger sliders. I accidentally switch the setting every now and then and it can really throw you off during a match.

The stops on the triggers would be great. They do make a difference. Main reason I use the Xbox for COD.

I think this will be expensive. Like over £150 easily.

@Korgon I've never had that happen to me. Though I do only use 2 of the 4 paddles. When all 4 are on I do keep hitting them.

Damn FINALLY! Though I love the dualsense I definitely miss the back buttons from the DS4 attachment. Almost pulled the trigger on the SCUF controller but will happily wait for an official one, really hope this one pans out!

Just please make a black one from the start!!

I'd would expect it to run on PC, but not PS4.

But yeah, pro controllers are pricey. I could probably live without this..... That won't stop me from wasting money on it if it looks nice.

my idea of premium analogue sticks that dont drift

@gollumb82 It's pretty easy to replace the PS5 controller battery and replace it with a larger capacity one. DualSense is only 1560mAh and you can get 2,600mAh or larger battery for around £20, or less if you shop around. I haven't done it on DualSense but I did on DualShock4 and have seen the replacement video below which is very simple and links to the battery on amazon.

Honestly I'd just prefer an inexpensive back button attachment. This is likely to be £150 or something. Not interested in that.

When the Elite Series 2 controller came out I couldn't see myself paying $180 for a controller. A few months ago when the Elite Series 2 was on sale for $140, I gave in and bought it. Now it's probably my favorite controller of all time right next to the Dualsense. I've been hoping Sony would release a back button attachment for the Dualsense like they did with the Dualshock 4. But I'll buy a Dualsense Pro controller also. I can do without stick swapping and trigger adjustments, but I love having back buttons on my controllers!

I'd been wanting Sony to do a Pro controller for aaaages, then they released the back buttons and to be honest, I was perfectly happy with them as a much cheaper alternative. Then they made the PS4 controller (with back buttons) not work with PS5 games for no good reason and still haven't released back buttons for the PS5 even though they sold out on PS4.

Worried how much the pro controller is going to go for, maybe they'll release back buttons at last alongside it?

@Nexozi I do use all four paddles for Halo so maybe your on to something there. I think the sliders would be better positioned on the top of the controller right next to the USB slot but oh well. Other than that little issue I love that controller so Playstation coming out with one would be welcome news!

@anoyonmus ita one of the best sources

@get2sammyb fairly reliable. But these fairly reliable sources can be wrong sometimes.

I think we should just wait and see what Sony says.

I've been buying third party games on the XSX over PS5 to be able to play with any controller I want. If Sony would at least let me play PS5 games with a dualshock 4 with my Collective Mind back buttons attachment I'd would buy more games on PS5. Thank god I chose to play the PS4 Pro version of Elden Ring on my PS5 and could play with back buttons making the game so much more enjoyable

Maybe the triggers on this ps5 won’t wear out, sadly on my original pad the r2 trigger is a bit wobbly now. I’m blaming GT7. I’ve ordered a replacement spring from eBay so hopefully it’ll be as good as new again

I’m not a fan of rumors either but news is news. This is something to get excited about if you’re in the market for something like this. If anything it’s a cool concept.

Furthermore, someone would have reported this to Push and if Push didn’t report on it someone would be complaining about that instead. You really can’t please everyone in journalism…

Im not sure I have a need for this. I genuinely believe the controller we got is a pemium feeling item as is. But choice is never a bad thing, and maybe someday someone will convince me I need back buttons or shorter trigger travel lengths... but for now I think I'll be keeping my money 💵

You know, RetroFighters actually make pretty good controllers, maybe Sony could simply officially licence them because let's face it, they're not very good at making controllers, the triggers on Xbox controllers are better in my opinion. I held a Series X controller recently and it felt very good to hold, the stick placement doesn't bother me but the controller felt of better quality, it's hard to understand why though, that's just what I thought in the moment.

I'm waiting for the release of the RetroFighters PS2 controller coming out in September. It looks very high quality and I still play my PS2 regularly.

I used to be someone who talked down about Xbox still using batteries but I changed my mind recently. Due to the price of new gen controllers it got me thinking I wouldn't need two DualSence's if they had batteries that u could recharge in a wall socket while I play. (I don't like having a wire where I can help it).

I guess this is good news for folks who like back paddles and customization, but... I'm a huge fan of the stock DS, so I'll stick with it. It's a little bulky, I guess, but it feels great to me otherwise.

I love the XB Elite controllers and it was one of the things that made me jump back into XB in 2018 since I loved that controller, and, frankly hated the DS4 (not as much as DS3, but hated it anyway and tried every 3rd party controller for PS4 before realizing they're all terrible.)

I know Sony tried it with SCUF late in the PS4 (the infamous Layden-in-the-E3-booth moment), and I considered it, but it never seemed worth it for the price.

Curious how much it costs, MS's is stupidly expensive, but if it has haptics this could easily be stupidly-expensive-er. Not sure I need a premium controller on both systems at this point, but it'll be cool to see, anyway. And the rubber on my DS5 is getting iffy on the left stick despite using it far less than my XB controller, so maybe I can convince myself to splurge.

I mean, I love my PlayStation and I always get one on launch day and upgraded to the pro on launch day and will do the same this time as well, but spending like $300 AUD on a pro controller that does practically nothing extra the one you get with it does has never appealed to me

Why would I want to remove the analog sticks? They don't get in the way when I'm using the dpad. Is it so far can fix stick drift myself?

They’ll definitely be expensive, given they’ll likely be produced in fairly small numbers. But no doubt at all there is a market of people willing to pay for them.

@Milktastrophe you can get sticks of different height, width etc. to make you more pro.

No thanks your regular controllers are pricey enough.

I'll take this opportunity to beg for official PC support. Please, Sony! Relying on individual games, third party programs, and Steam to have your controllers work is not a good strategy, especially if you want people playing your games on PC.

Was looking at buying a SCUF for PS5, have used the 4 paddle SCUF Impact for years on PS4 and it's superb. Might hold off now though to see if this is actually a thing.

I have personally had a few problems with the Dualsense, so I would buy this if it was confirmed that the internal build quality was way better or that stick drift was negated entirely!

They can put as many buttons as physically possible, use the best materials to build it, and get it to provide the most comfortable experience while playing...... If it ends up using the same small battery that depletes after a few hours of gaming, they can keep it.

Sony trying to make Xbox controllers completely Obsolete I try lol.

I’m hip. Instead give me a gyro motion sensor bar, same deal applies to the Switch 🤗

It’s too bad, if Ratchet and Clank drift apart and Returnal supported gyro motion aiming I’d actually give them a chance.

RE8 just got VR2 support so it will automatically have motion based aiming, thank the heavens

@GMaster7 @gollumb82 Xbox controllers are horrible on stick drift. The G man is going to send you to xen for that blasphemy lol.

@4kgk2 😂 They are doing a good job so far. I love the dual sense controllers.

Should make the dualsense compatible with the ps4

@GADG3Tx87 & the ps logo back to the ps1 colours

@kyleforrester87 I see. I guess that would be good for some people, the default stick shape works good for me though.

I really like the stock DualSense, but would consider one of these if the price was right... That's if it comes to fruition. Stick drift would be a minor concern, although it only takes 10/15 minutes to fit a new one. Although if they use completely different ones I would most definitely be waiting to see how they fare.

I don't know if I want this or need this. The Dualsense already is perfect for me, the best controller ever made in every sense (no pun intended). I guess this depends on pricing and features

It doesn't solve the issue which is a crappy dpad. How i miss the 6 button mega drive controller and the saturn one. These new dpads are filled with input errors cause you can't press them properly. They pretend to be 4 buttons, but they are not and putting plastic in between these buttons guarantees you can't make precise diagonals without input errors.

Anyways, i don't expect Sony to care. I don't trust them after they forced us to have the dual shock 4 back led on all the time.

Hopefully not just in white...

Oh boy! Another item that I won't be able to get because of supply chain issues and scalpers.

Sounds good but needs at least two back buttons with dev support..

@Don_Corleone Big Don, where did I say anything in praise of the Xbox controller(s)? I just said that I'm sticking with my DualSense! Don't send La Famiglia after me!

@GMaster7 It's a joke I wasn't accusing you of anything relax lol.

@Shinnok789 @gollumb82 Same thoughts here, would only be tempted if it had a larger battery.

I wish they would work on making more consoles first! You have no chance of getting a ps5 here! Making controllers for a machine that you can’t buy is just bad business

the only thing that would make these faulty controllers premium is fixing the incessant and inevitable stick drift .

i miss the Xbox360 slim controller so much , it was durable & heavy . you could vigorously game on it and rage quit the controller to the floor and it would still work . well.. the battery part would break but still

Don't want to hear about ps5 pro stuff for at least a couple of years. Imagine finally getting your hands on a ps5 only to learn there will be a pro version out soon. A controller I don't care about, but it got me thinking about ps5 pro.

They better do something about those sharp edges at bottom if they do I so much prefer the PS4 Controller for comfort PS5 controller is far too big IMO

@Sir_funkington Never had drifting sticks but certainly know the pain of the dodgy R2 on the PS4 controllers. I went through 4 controllers. I play a lot of racing games and so it's a big issue. First time I realised how bad they were was on Tearaway Unfolded. I got to a part and got stuck. Seemed impossible till I looked up a video and saw a bridge, I was controlling with my R2 trigger, was only extending half the distance it was meant to be. Making crossing the gap impossible... but also explaining why I'd been doing so bad in racing games. 😂
