PUBG has become free-to-play and newcomers will be happy with the crossplay and cross platform multiplayer status of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

Update 15.2 has come out and the developers have shared the patch notes. There’s lots to enjoy from the update including drones and very helpful tutorial modes that introduce new players to the game while helping established players to become even better.

It’s one of the best battle royale games available and the good news is that everyone can now play it at no cost.

PUBG is now free-to-play on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

As for why PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has become available at no cost, creative director Dave Curd told Gamerant that it is not a response to competition such as Fortnite and Apex Legends. Instead, it is an opportunity to grow the community and “see developments that we may not have witnessed with the previous pay-to-play model”.

Newcomers can download the game for free now from the PSN, Microsoft, and Steam store. Those who purchased the game will receive a Commemorative Pack which includes the Battlegrounds Plus upgrade for ranked mode, custom matches, and in-game skins.

PUBG is crossplay but only has cross platform multiplayer between PlayStation and Xbox.

This might seem odd to newcomers, but the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds community are mostly happy with this restriction. Per Reddit where players have overwhelmingly rejected the idea of adding online play between consoles and PC, the situation isn’t wanted because there’s no aim assist.

Not only that, but there’s also the suggestion that those using a mouse have a bigger advantage than players using a controller.

The cross platform multiplayer is only available between PlayStation and Xbox as the PC version is on a different server.

If you decide to download the mobile version of the game, you will be able to enjoy action between iOS and Android, but you will not be able to play with console and computers.

Although some players will be disappointed by the lack of gameplay between consoles and PC via Steam, it’s arguably for the better. PlayStation and Xbox is an even playing field whereas those on computers would have advantages.
