“Spider-Man: No Way Home” swings back on top of the box office during a holiday weekend where American theaters aimed to lure moviegoers with discounted $3 tickets. The first “National Cinema Day” nationwide promotion appeared to work with the highest-attended day of the year, with The Cinema Foundation estimating there were 8.1 million moviegoers on Saturday. The one-day event was offered on more than 30,000 screens and held in more than 3,000 theaters including major chains of AMC and Regal Cinemas. Comscore says the event collected preliminary box office returns of $24.3 million. The top performing titles for the day included “Top Gun: Maverick,” “DC League of Super Pets” and “Bullet Train.”

U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge is taking part in international training in the Baltic Sea amid Russia’s war in Ukraine and tensions in the region. The Kearsarge is the first ship of the Wasp class to take part in international training in the Baltic in at least two decades. Associated Press journalists visited the ship last week. The Kearsarge has been training for several months with the militaries of Sweden and Finland. Both countries formally applied to join NATO after Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24.

It was a tough weekend for The Weeknd.

The uniquely enduring literary agent who worked for years to find a publisher for Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” and over the following decades arranged deals for everyone from true crime writer Joe McGinniss to the creators of the Berenstain Bears has died. Sterling Lord was 102. He endured the initial unwillingness of publishers to take on Kerouac’s unorthodox narrative and was the longtime agent for other shining lights of the Beats. His full roster of clients produced works about sports, politics, murder and the travails of illustrated animals. His daughter told The Associated Press that Lord “had a good death and died peacefully of old age” Saturday.

Marcus Rashford’s double and a debut goal for Antony secured Manchester United a fourth successive victory as a 1-0 win ended Arsenal’s 100% start to the Premier League. Deadline-day signing Antony was handed a start after only joining on Thursday and took just 35 minutes to score his first goal. Arsenal started the second half strongly and equalized through Bukayo Saka. United struck back as Rashford was sent racing through to score by a brilliant through-ball from Bruno Fernandes. The 24-year-old Rashford grabbed his second after Eriksen teed him up in the 75th minute as United won four consecutive Premier League games for the first time since April 2021.

Four people were shot and one person was struck with a blunt object, the Palatka Police Department said Sunday in a Facebook post. Mississippi's capital has taken a step closer toward restoring normal water service to tens of thousands of customers. Officials announced Sunday that water pressure was back to normal for most of Jackson. Torrential rains and flooding of the Pearl River in late August exacerbated problems at one of Jackson’s two treatment plants, leading to a drop in pressure throughout the city. Officials said Sunday that most of Jackson should have running water, though residents are still advised not to drink straight from the tap. The city remains under a boil water notice. Officials also said future repairs leave potential for fluctuations in water pressure.

The Minnesota Twins put right-hander Tyler Mahle back on the 15-day injured list, raising questions about their rotation during a difficult stretch. Mahle left Saturday night’s 13-0 loss at the Chicago White Sox because of shoulder inflammation. He was charged with four runs and five hits in two innings in his fourth start since he was acquired in an Aug. 2 trade with Cincinnati. The 27-year-old Mahle was activated from the IL before the game after previously being sidelined by shoulder inflammation.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will take the national carrier’s first direct flight later this month from Auckland to New York, where she will attend the U.N. General Assembly.

English golfer Oliver Wilson holed two birdie putts from around 65 feet on the back nine to win the Made in HimmerLand event and end a victory drought of almost eight years. Wilson is ranked No. 745. He rolled in the long putts on No. 13 and then on No. 17 to take the outright lead. He held his nerve to par the last hole, hitting his drive off a small mound of turf instead of a tee. He closed with a 4-under 67 and finished a shot ahead of Ewen Ferguson. Wilson had not recorded a top-10 finish on the European tour since a tie for fourth in the same event in 2019.

The chief financial officer of retail chain Bed Bath & Beyond has died. The company confirmed Sunday that Gustavo Arnal died on Sept. 2 but did not give a cause of death. Arnal joined the company in May 2020 after previous stints at Avon, Walgreens Boots Alliance and Procter & Gamble. Bed Bath & Beyond has been facing turbulence recently. Its shares made a monstrous run from $5.77 to $23.08 over a little more than two weeks in August, in trading reminiscent of last year’s meme-stock craze, when out-of-favor companies suddenly became darlings of smaller-pocketed investors.

Martin Braithwaite didn’t have to go far to start showing his worth again in Spain. The Denmark forward made his debut with Espanyol after leaving city rival Barcelona and scored the winner in a 1-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish league. It was Espanyol’s first victory of the season and Braithwaite’s first goal in more than a year. He had appeared in only four matches with the Catalan club since then. Braithwaite was among the players Barcelona let go from its squad in the transfer window to make more salary cap room for its new signings.

It wasn't long ago that there was a crisis at Manchester United but that seems like a dim and distant memory now. United has won four straight games in the Premier League and the latest sign that United is well on the road to recovery came with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday. That ended Arsenal's 100% start to the season. Marcus Rashford scored two goals and there was also one on debut for Brazil winger Antony, who joined for $95 million from Ajax. United is only three points behind league leader Arsenal and two behind title favorite Manchester City. Leicester was embarrassed 5-2 by Brighton in the other game to pile the pressure on manager Brendan Rodgers.

The Texas Rangers designated left-hander Dallas Keuchel for assignment before Sunday’s series finale against the Boston Red Sox. The 34-year-old Keuchel was 0-2 with a 12.60 ERA in two starts for the Rangers, including taking the loss in Friday’s game when he allowed seven runs in 4 2/3 innings. He’s 2-9 with a 9.20 ERA in 14 combined starts with the White Sox, Arizona and Texas this season.

The United Arab Emirates says that a glider has crashed near a skydiving company in Dubai and that its South African pilot was killed. The crash on Sunday comes just days after a similar incident. The country's state run-WAM news agency did not specify the cause of the “amateur glider” crash, or elaborate on where exactly in the city the incident occurred. Dubai is a popular skydiving destination where parachutes can be seen daily over its skyscrapers and beaches. Last Wednesday, a glider hurtled into the parking lot of the country’s largest mosque in Abu Dhabi, injuring its pilot.

Lithuania protested its double-overtime loss to Germany at the EuroBasket tournament on Sunday. It says referees didn't award it a free throw following a technical foul against Germany in regulation. It was not immediately clear how or if FIBA would respond to the protest. For now, it’s a German win and a huge one for the hosts. Franz Wagner scored 32 points, Dennis Schroder added 25 and Germany held off Lithuania 109-107.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain pounded parts of northwest Georgia on Sunday, sparking flash flooding and dangerously high waters in some areas. The National Weather Service said rainfall at a rate of one inch per hour was causing creeks, streams, roadways and urban areas to experience flooding. Up to 10 inches of rain was reported to have fallen in Chattooga County. The weather service called the situation “extremely dangerous and life-threatening.” Both Chattooga County and Floyd County were under flash flood warnings. Some residents were advised to boil their water before drinking because of flooding at a water treatment plant.

The Weeknd suddenly ended his sold-out concert in Southern California after losing his voice during a mid-song performance. The four-time Grammy winner was performing his third song “Can’t Feel My Face” before he abruptly stopped his show Saturday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. He then walked off stage, eventually returned and told the audience he lost his voice. While onstage, the Weeknd apologized for canceling the show and promised the audience a refund. The Weeknd went on social media to explain that he’s devastated after his “voice went out” during the first song. His next tour date is scheduled for Sept. 22 in Toronto.

The Red Sox are bringing up top prospect Triston Casas for their series finale at Fenway Park against the Texas Rangers. The 6-foot-4, 22-year-old first baseman has played 284 games in the minors. Casas is batting .269 with 46 homers and 181 RBIs, and was called up from Triple-A Worcester. Boston manager Alex Cora says Casas will “play almost every day.” To make room on the roster, the club sent struggling right-handed hitter Bobby Dalbec to Worcester.

Authorities say a Las Vegas journalist has been stabbed to death outside his home and police are searching for a suspect. The Las Vegas Review-Journal says officers found investigative reporter Jeff German dead with stab wounds around 10:30 a.m. Saturday after authorities received a 911 call. Authorities say it appears the 69-year-old German was in an altercation with another person that led to the stabbing. German joined the Review-Journal in 2010 after more than two decades at the Las Vegas Sun, where he was a columnist and reporter who covered courts, politics, labor, government and organized crime.

The U.S. ambassador to Russia, John Sullivan, ended his tenure as America’s top diplomat in Moscow on Sunday after nearly three years, spanning the Trump and Biden administrations, and will retire from a lengthy career in government service. That word comes from the U.S. Embassy. Sullivan is leaving as Russia’s war with Ukraine is in its seventh month. His four-decade public service career included postings as deputy secretary of state and senior positions in the departments of Justice, Defense and Commerce. Elizabeth Rood, the deputy chief of mission to Russia, will be the top U.S. diplomat in Moscow until a successor nominated by President Joe Biden replaces Sullivan.
