The G923 is the newer model, and while it looks almost identical to its predecessor, it comes with improved force feedback for that extra bit of realism as you hit the track. Both wheels are known for their reliability and are certainly worth their price point – you can't go wrong with one of these.

Next, and perhaps the G29's biggest rival right now, is the Thrustmaster T248. One of the most affordable wheels in Thrustmaster's range, the T248 is ideal for beginners. We'd pick up a Logitech G923 or the Thrustmaster T248 ahead of this model if you can, but the choice is yours.

And finally, a cheaper option courtesy of Hori. The RWA Apex wheel is the most affordable wheel on our list that, despite the low price point, has amassed an impressively positive collection of user reviews online. The lower cost here is arguably its biggest selling point, and it could certainly prove to be a great first wheel for anyone looking to give one a go before eventually upgrading to something a little more fancy.

If you've got a little more cash to spend, these next wheels are fantastic options that will really start to make your dream setup become a reality. For this tier, we're exclusively recommending Thrustmaster wheels that support the manufacturer's 'quick release' technology (explained below), as we feel they edge the competition at this price point.

The Thrustmaster T300 has been a hugely popular choice for years, serving as one of the cheapest ways to get into the company's 'quick release' range. By grabbing a T300 RS – which is already a fantastic wheel in its own right – you'll also have the option of buying different types of Thrustmaster wheels such as the F1 add-ons and swapping them over as and when you like. This customisable design is a winner in our eyes, making this worth the extra cost over our budget recommendations.

Taking things up a notch, and a perfect choice for any diehard Gran Turismo fans, is the T-GT II. Sporting that same quick release tech, the T-GT II is one step closer to being a truly high end wheel, coming with a decent set of three pedals and that lovely Gran Turismo branding. In truth, we'd say the T-GT II is a touch overpriced compared to its direct competitors, but it's certainly a great wheel and one that's sure to improve your racing enjoyment.

If money is no object and you're willing to truly splash out on the racing wheel of your dreams, you're going to want to invest in a direct drive wheel, rather than the belt-driven wheels featured above. Direct drive wheels are seen to be the most realistic in terms of their performance, offering stronger force feedback, but that improved technology comes at a price.

There are several options for you in the world of elite direct drive wheels, but the Fanatec range stands out as a particularly solid choice. Used by professional eSports stars all over the world, Fanatec's range of racing wheels and bases are known to be of an incredibly high standard.

While you used to be able to grab pre-made bundles on sites like Amazon, your best bet currently is to head to Fanatec's website directly where you can build your own bundle. Just make sure to watch out for wheels and accessories that are compatible with your chosen consoles.

Are these seats got everything built in? I’m looking for something that is easy to setup and fun but I don’t want the hassle of a time consuming build. Are these things literally connect and play?

While the extra features on G923 are nice unfortunately it's at the cost of limited backwards compatibility with games that the G29 used to work on no longer do..

@Crumbytweak the seats are just the seats. You have to buy the wheels and pedals seperately. The seats usually involve some diy building too.

I'd recommend the G29 over the G923 as they're fundamentally the same except the price tag. I've been having fun with some sim racing but found it's also great for some arcade racing too and have been using it for Crazy Taxi and Sega Rally, just need a seat now

Yeah i think the g29 is more than good enough for the casual racing fan. The Fanatec gear is a real investment for a console player imo. Strangely enough i do better with a controller on WRC10 than i do with the wheel tho.

I choose the G29 over the G923 because the G29 is compatible with PS3. From what I've read the Trustmaster t300 is an amazing wheel that is unreliable and badly designed and will stop working eventually. I very nearly bought one but read too many negative reviews from users. The next option after the G29 is the fanatec GT DD Pro bundle for GT7 @ €700 and very hard to get as it always sold out on fanatec website. I might try and get one in the future but the G29 is amazing for playing GT7 daily races. Apparently the speed is in your braking technique which I'm trying to learn.

Honestly the g29 is a good wheel (although it’s horribly clunky with those gear driven wheels) but the thing that lets it down is the pedals. Fist of all the brake is WAY too stiff. There are many many threads of people modding the brake pedal as it’s just too stiff as standard. Also the pedals are bad quality and tend to break down after 1-2 years. I’ve had two sets of g29 pedals one last just under two years the other one lasted about a year.

If you want this price range, trust me and go thrustmaster . I had a t300 but the new ones are pretty much the same (belt driven). The wheel doesn’t look as good aesthetically as g29 but the belt driven wheel is so much nicer to use and the pedals are much better (albeit there is no clutch but you never use this on console much anyway)

If you guys really want to go all out with your sim racing get the Fanatec Gran truismso DD wheel base. I just got it with the CSL pedals and the f1 club sport wheel. It really is a game changer compared to the lower tier wheels. It will set you back around £800 but worth every penny!
